Originally the Gondorian province of Calenardhon, the land north of the White Mountains was gifted by Steward Cirion to Eorl of the Northmen in 2510 (Third Age). Eorl had led his men to the aid of Gondor.

Arnor, or the Northern Kingdom, was a kingdom of the Dúnedain in the land of Eriador in Middle Earth. The name probably means "Land of the King", from Sindarin. The seat of its Kings, was at Annúminas.



SHIRE / RHUDAUR / ARTHEDAIN / CARDOLAN

The Sindarin name Forodwaith translates loosely as Northern Waste and literally as Northern Realm, and was a name for the land north of the Iron Mountains of the First Age, it was an area of immense cold.

Ithilien, or "Moon-land," is the easternmost province of Gondor, the only part across the Great River Anduin lying between the river and the Mountains of Shadow, subdivided by the stream of Morgulduin into North and South Ithilien.

Rivendell was located at the edge of a narrow gorge of the river Bruinen (one of the main approaches to Rivendell comes from a nearby ford of Bruinen), but well hidden in the moorlands and foothills of the Hithaeglir or Misty Mountains.

Early in the First Age some of the Eldar left the Great March and settled in the lands east of the Misty Mountains. By S.A. 1200 Galadriel had made contact with an existing realm in the area that would later be known as Lothlórien.

Was the home of the tree shepherds, the Ents. It was named after the oldest Ent, Treebeard or Treebeard after it. Located at the south-eastern end of the Misty Mountains near the Gap of Rohan.

In ancient times when the Elves began their Great Journey westward to the Undying Lands, some of the Elves were reluctant to cross the Misty Mountains and decided to settle in the woods along the Anduin.



RUINS of DOL GULDUR

It is the westernmost land of the continent. The Gulf of Lune divides it into Forlindon (North Lindon) and Harlindon (South Lindon). Mithlond or the Grey Havens stood near the mouth of the River Lhûn at the gulf's eastern end.

The Lonely Mountain; the Dwarf-kingdom founded by Thráin I after the loss of Khazad-dûm. The kingdom was destroyed by the dragon Smaug, but was refounded by Thráin's descendant Thorin II Oakenshield.

Also known as Khazad-dûm, The Black Chasm, The Black Pit, Dwarrowdelf, Hadhodrond, and Phurunargian: was a name given to an enormous underground city in the Misty Mountains of Middle-earth.



WEST-DOOR / DIMRILL GATE

A Gondorian fortification at the southern end of the Misty Mountains, at the source of the River Isen. It was granted to the Wizard Saruman by Steward Beren of Gondor, though its central tower of Orthanc remained standing.

Rhûn is a name used for all lands lying east Rhovanion, around and beyond the inland Sea of Rhûn, from where many attacks on Gondor and its allies came during the Third Age.

'Umbar' was a name—of unknown meaning—given to the area by its original inhabitants. The Númenóreans adopted the name, probably aware of the fact that 'Umbar' was the Quenya word for 'fate'.

After years of oppression, the Black Numenoreans gained control of Angmar after the disappearance of its last king. Atalantë was founded by Queen Alessia after the battle of Carn Dûm. New darkness is said to be lurking around.

Historically its northern border was held to be the river Harnen, but by the time of the War of the Ring all the land south of the river Poros was under the influence of the Haradrim.

Slightly beyond the border of the lands of the Haradwaith stand hidden lands, forgotten ones since the long gone ages about to be found. The land is wild and rather tempestuous and not yet recorded in maps or Annals.

After the defeat of Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance, Mordor was taken by Gondor, and Gondorians built fortifications around it. As Gondor's power faded, however, it once again fell into the hands of the Enemy.
